Capoeira conference with Mestre João Grande

Kabula Arts is hosting the Capoeiragem conference in Shacklewell, E8, on Friday and Saturday 1-2 July 2011, featuring Brazilian masters João Grande and Gato. As well as some great capoeira, it’ll be a chance to support the Movement for Change, working with children in the Middle East.

Sunday in the park

I’m hoping this fine weather holds until May 8, when Capoeira Arte is planning an afternoon out playing in the lovely Golders Hill park.

Everyone is welcome from 2 pm – players, spectators, kids, grannies and dogs. Free of charge. Bring water (especially if you’re playing) and your own food, or there’s a great cafe. And a free zoo as well!

Click here for a map. Accessible via 328 bus from Kilburn High Road.

It’s not quite capoeira but … Brent dance record

Come along and join a world record attempt for the most people dancing at the Brent Respect Festival in Roundwood Park on 4 July with Bang 103.6 FM radio!

And if (like me) you’re not sure how to do the electric slide/candy dance, there’s a free practice session in Wembley Square on Friday 2 July from noon to 4 pm.

And a reminder, Capoeira Canal will be performing at 1 pm at the festival too!

London goes Brazil this summer!

Wow, just got news of two major London festivals this summer, both featuring capoeira big time!

Brazil! Brazil! photograph

Fresh from a sell-out tour of Australia and New Zealand, the Brazil! Brazil! show is on from 11 June to 18 July as part of  Festival Brazil at the South Bank – a thrilling spectacle of capoeira, samba, carnival and world cup football fever!

Moment and Monument at Tower Bridge

Meanwhile, this year the City of London Festival is celebrating the culture of the Portuguese-speaking world, and includes new choreography by capoeira mestre Ponciano Almeida working with the Aurora chamber orchestra.  There’s a concert performance at St Lukes at 8 pm on Friday 9 July, or follow the Moment and Monument street performance from the Tower of London to the Royal Exchange, starting at 12.30 and 6.00 pm on Monday 5 and Wednesday 7 July.

Last minute news: Competition this weekend

Sorry it’s a bit late but the London International Capoeira Campeonato is taking place this weekend, 29-30 May as part of the International Combat Sports Show at Excel in East London – easily reachable on the Docklands Light Railway (or the Jubilee line if it’s running, which as Brent folks will know, it most likely isn’t).
